LAS VEGAS — The Miss Universe pageant was rather eventful on Sunday night, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons as host Steve Harvey read out the wrong name.
The two finalists, Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines, were clutching their hands on stage as they waited for Harvey to read out the name of the winner.
Harvey announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez Arévalo, as the winner. Miss Colombia was then crowned Miss Universe.
That was, until Harvey realized he misread the cue card. “I have to apologize,” he said to the crowd. “The first runner-up is Colombia,” Harvey then said.
It turns out that Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was the actual Miss Universe 2015.
Harvey then tried to apologize and showed the card to the cameras and audience. “Horrible mistake, but the right thing,” the host said. “I can show it to you right here. The first runner-up is Colombia.”
To add insult to injury, Harvey tweeted an apology afterwards where he spelled the countries ‘Philippians’ and ‘Columbia’.
Later in a tweet that had been spell checked, Harvey wrote, “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.”
He also said, “Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake.”
