Stowaway bear travels 65 miles in trash truck

FRESNO, CALIFORNIA — A California black mountain bear hitched a ride on a trash truck to a dump site about 65 miles away from its home in the mountains.

The bear, known as Cinnamon, somehow crawled into a trash compactor in Hume Lake area, CBS News reported. The trash compactor was then picked up by a disposal truck on Tuesday. The driver had no idea that Cinnamon was inside the compactor and drove it all the way to the Orange Avenue Disposal dump in Fresno.

"When I dumped the container I saw all of the employees running. Not knowing I pulled forward about ten feet and I saw Cinnamon running across the parking lot," K.C., the driver of the trash truck told CBS affiliate KGPE.

Luckily, Cinnamon was not injured in the incident. The animal was tranquilized and taken back to Hume Lake. "He's a local down there. One of the local bears," Catherine Cornell, a leader at Grant Grove Village told KGPE. "I'm sure everyone in the community is happy that Cinnamon is back."
