PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO — The Texas 'affluenza' teen who killed four people drunk-driving and then fled probation with the help from his mother may only have to spend 120 days in jail after the two were captured in Puerto Vallarta in Mexico on Monday night.
Mexican officials said they captured Ethan Couch, 18, and his mother Tonya Couch Monday night a neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta's old town district.
The two were originally staying at one of the holiday bungalows by the beach, but had moved to a more discreet location, Jalisco state prosecutor Jesus Almaguer Ramirez said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The pair fled weeks earlier after the Tarrant County district attorney's office began investigating whether Couch had violated his probation by drinking at a party, raising the possibility of real jail time.
Before they left, the Couches even had the audacity to throw a going-away party for themselves. Couch dyed his blond hair and facial hair dark brown.
Officials suspect Ethan Couch and his mom crossed the border in his mother's black 2011 Ford F-150 and made the drive to Puerto Vallarta, where they may have tried to blend in among the American tourists on vacation.
Tonya Couch now faces charges of hindering apprehension, which could mean two to ten years behind bars, but unfortunately due to a technicality, Ethan may only get 120 days in jail.
In 2013, Couch hit and killed four pedestrians near Fort Worth while he was driving drunk. Couch got off with only a short time in rehab and 10 years' probation after a defense expert argued in juvenile court that Couch suffered from an inability to tell right from wrong because he was spoiled and had rich parents that never punished him.
