NEW YORK — The disturbing, but initially straightforward narrative about a teenage girl's gang rape in a playground in Brownsville, Brooklyn last week while she was with her until-recently estranged father has become complicated by the role of her father during the incident.
According to the New York Times, a distant camera picked up the 18-year-old sexual assault victim and her father walking into Brooklyn's Osborne Park at around 9 p.m. last Thursday night with beer from a bodega.
The now-detained rape suspects say that they came across the victim and her 39-year-old father intoxicated and having sex near the park's handball court. The suspects say they told the victim's father they'd "take over from here" and he left on his own accord, while the father says the teens threatened him with a handgun so he fled, reports the Wall Street Journal. Police have yet to recover a handgun from the scene.
The New York Post reports that the suspects said the father later returned and threw a beer bottle at them before fleeing once more. Surveillance footage shows the father then drunkenly staggered into a nearby deli and asked to use the phone to call 911, but the deli worker didn't understand why the man wanted to use the phone and turned him away.
The daughter's account of her rape has also changed from what she initially said. At first the victim said all five boys raped her, but she now says she had sex with at least one of the suspects and was forced to give oral sex to two others. The New York Times reports the victim now also says she didn't see a gun during the incident.
The suspects have tried to say that their gang rape was actually consensual. New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton told the New York Post that the police have no doubt the woman was raped.
Officials say the woman and her father have been separated for most of her life. He lost custody of her when she was two, and she was raised on the West Coast.
