A helical spring that stretches and can bounce up and down, Slinky was invented by naval engineer Richard James in 1940.
Between 1945 and 2005, over 300 million Slinkys were sold. In 2003, Slinky was named to the "Century of Toys List", as one the 100 most memorable and most creative toys of the twentieth century. So popular was Slinky that the United States Postal Service issued a stamp in its honor in 1999. Even today, Slinky continues to be among the world's best-selling toys.
