San Francisco's ambitious zero-waste objective
San Francisco has set itself the ambitious challenge of recycling 100% of its waste by 2020. The goal is to avoid using both landfills and incinerators, which produce a great deal of greenhouse gas emissions. As our correspondents report, the policy is already proving beneficial, with new jobs, less airborne pollution and the production of a high-quality compost used in local farms.
