SAN FRANCISCO — Three inmates have finally been taken into police custody a week after staging a daring prison break in Orange County, thanks to a citizen's quick eye.
The fugitives, all of whom were convicted of violent crimes, were apprehended just a day after one of them surrendered to authorities in Santa Ana.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that on Saturday morning, a man flagged down police officers after recognizing a stolen van and an escaped inmate outside a Whole Foods in San Francisco.
When the officers approached the van, the suspect, Hossein Nayeri, fled across the street into Golden Gate Park.
Police pursued Nayeri into the park as he circled Kezar Stadium. He then ran into a back parking lot, through Kezar Pavilion and straight to Park Police Station where he was cornered by officers and then arrested.
Jonathan Tieu was discovered inside the van and taken into custody. Police found several rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle, but no weapon.
From San Francisco, the pair are set to be taken back to the Men's Central Jail in Orange County, some 375 miles away, according to Reuters.
With the manhunt over, investigators are now focusing on finding out how the three men were able to escape from the maximum-security prison.
