Art Green just ate an apple. Actually, he made his way through more than 40 red apples in his successful attempt to set a new world record.

Wrapping his teeth around one of the dozens of gorgeous specimens available to him, he recorded a crunch of 79.1 decibels — safely above the minimum 75 set by Guinness World Records as there was no existing record to beat.

He received an official certificate and a hug from Guinness adjudicator Kimberley Dennis, who scrutinised Green's big bite, a lavish PR confection timed for television cameras.

"I think a big mouth makes a better crunch," commented Paul Paynter of The Yummy Fruit Company ("they call me Dr Apple"), who had travelled from Hawkes Bay for the event, at Roundhead Studios in Auckland's Newton Terrace.

Afterwards Green, New Zealand's first television Bachelor, said that he had "reached the pinnacle of life so far".

Paynter's family grow the apples, which were developed in Minnesota and reportedly have cells twice the size of other apples.

The original plan for the record attempt had been to fly Green to Minnesota and the world's quietest room — also Guinness World Records official — at Orfield Laboratories.

Watching Green bite the apple were Paynter, Green's girlfriend Matlida Rice, and a team of people wearing white t-shirts emblazoned with a picture of an apple wearing headphones. Later Rice said, "Well done, that was exciting stuff. Nailed it."

In her official capacity, Dennis checked the sound level meter, walked the tape measure laid out to ensure Green was at an appropriate distance from the meter, and gave the go ahead for the record attempt. Afterwards, as an admiring member of the public, she remarked on how nervous Green had been.

Paynter said Green was chosen for the record attempt because his abs were more impressive than his own.

Asked why he wanted to bite an apple for sport, Green said, "Why not? It's so completely random and something funny to tell my friends."

Since filming The Bachelor, Green, a fitness devotee and co-founder of Clean Paleo, which sells protein powders and dried meat, has written a book and won a Fight For Life bout against former All Black Zac Guildford.

He is soon to be replaced in the nation's affections by a new Bachelor, Christchurch man Jordan Mauger, a film director, model and actor who has worked on super yachts and as a personal trainer.

What's next for Green?

"I don't know. When's John Key's term up?"
