A recently published study has identified an unexpected element believed to help dust devils on Mars grow.
Researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany have concluded that a funnel’s own shadow could “increase the total dust loading…and keep it self-sustained.”
Dust devils, which typically consist of spiraling air and particles, are relatively common occurrences on Earth and Mars, but the red planet’s low atmospheric pressure means that another force is likely helping to provide extra lift.
