Of all the skills that off-road motorcycle riders develop, few are as cool—or as useful—as knowing how to wheelie. A good wheelie can help in a multitude of situations, from lofting the front end over a log, to setting the bike up to blitz through a whoop section, to avoiding an obstacle on the track or trail. Of course, a wheelie is also one of the easiest ways to show-off on a dirt bike; it's tough not to look cool while riding on the back tire only, so long as you're doing it right. But for as fun as this technique is, the finer points of its execution can elude many riders. Finding the proper balance point and knowing which controls to use are tougher skills than you might think, and the key to developing repeatable wheelie skills is in finessing the bike (and not just dumping the clutch and grabbing a handful, a la most riders on YouTube). To help you fine-tune your wheelie skills, we've broken the wheelie down into a handful of easy-to-see steps. Become a master of these points and you will definitely elevate your wheelie game beyond where it is now!
