KINGWOOD, TEXAS — A contractor was caught on camera beating two family dogs with a pipe wrench.
Kingwood, Texas, homeowner Mike Willcox posted surveillance video on his Facebook showing a contractor for CenterPoint Energy violently swinging and hitting his two dogs, Flash and Stutter, with a wrench.
In the video, the worker can be seen crouching down poised to swing just before the two dogs can be seen running towards him. The first dog dodged the first swing, but then received a blow in the face. The second dog approached and received a blow to its side.
The two dogs, both 8-year-old Weimaraner bird dogs, sustained injuries from the incident that required veterinary attention.
"Never bitten anybody, very friendly," Willcox told CBS affiliate KHOU of the dogs. "It was like the guy was swinging to kill."
Flash suffered a bloody laceration under its left eye, a swollen, infected jaw and a concussion. Stutter now has breathing problems and is scheduled for surgery. Willcox has already paid least $2,000 in vet bills.
According to Willcox, the family was home at the time the contractor was in their backyard and received no warning of the visit. Willcox said that the worker did not ring the doorbell and that his 4-year-old son and wife watched the event unfold from a window in their home.
But, the contractor's boss told a different story.
"He only had a split second to think what he should do: let himself get mauled or should he try and keep the dogs away from him, so he tried to keep the dogs away from him," David Mimun of Star Corporation, which contracts for CenterPoint, told KHOU.
According to Mimun, the worker was at the home to disconnect a natural gas service because the residents had not paid their bills.
The worker is currently off all projects while investigations into the incident continue.
