Sunken German U-Boat Found in Gulf of Mexico

The wreckage of a World War II German submarine has been found 5,000 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, and the discovery may rewrite a bit of wartime history.
BP and Shell Oil Company, which had been surveying the gulf floor for an oil pipeline, announced the discovery of the U-166, which was sunk in 1942 after it torpedoed an American ship, on Friday.
''This is the find of a lifetime, it really is,'' said Robert Church, a marine archaeologist with C&C Technologies, which identified the wreckage about 45 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River.
An airplane was long thought to have sunk the U-166 in 1942. The plane bombed a submarine on Aug. 1, 1942, two days after the U-166 sank the Robert E. Lee, an American passenger freighter. But the location of the submarine suggested that the Robert E. Lee's Coast Guard escort sank the U-166, said Jack Irion, a marine archaeologist with the United States Minerals Management Service.
