FRESNO, CALIFORNIA — Two shar-pei pit bull dogs are on death row for mauling a newborn baby inside a family home at 12:30 a.m. on June 27.
The infant child was with her mother, sitting on the couch. An uncomfortably hot night, the 33-year-old mother walked over to open the front door to cool the house down, and stepped away from the baby for a moment. Knowing her brother’s dogs were on the premises, she mistakenly thought they were tied up outside.
Seconds later, the mother heard her baby’s screams, and ran back to where she’d left the child only to find the dogs had mauled her. The child died shortly after being rushed to a nearby hospital.
The woman’s brother surrendered his two dogs to the SPCA. They will be euthanized in the coming days.
Only the mother, her brother, and the newborn were in the house at the time. Police are calling the incident “an unfortunate accident.”
