Celebrate over 50,000 years of culture at Burramatta NAIDOC
As one of the world’s most ancient living cultures, Australia’s Aboriginal people have a continuous history spanning more than 50,000 years.
The area of Parramatta has been occupied by the Burramattagal people, a clan of the Darug, who lived here along the upper reaches of the Parramatta River. Burramattagal is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal word for the 'place where the eels lie down' to breed (in the Parramatta River).
Aboriginal Australia is a living legacy of spiritual knowledge, custodianship of land, culture, people and the connectedness of all things shared through rituals, art, dance, music, secret stories and journeys created in the Dreamtime – the time when ancestral spirits created the landforms and all life.
As they travelled they created Songlines which act as a map, recording details of the landscape and express the relationships between the land, sea and the people.
The stories and Songlines encompass lore, culture and spirituality to ensure the continuity of all things living.
Songlines are the oldest living narrative of our nation, and will be the focus for the 2016 Burramatta NAIDOC celebrations.
Immerse yourself in a family-friendly cultural experience!
Celebrations will commence at 1pm with a dance and a Welcome to Country presented by Auntie Kerrie Kenton. We'll wrap up the day with a gorgeous riverlight show and fireworks finale at 6pm!
