Letters from Iwo Jima
141 min | Drama | 2006
IMDb Score: 7,9/10

In 1945, the American and Japanese armies clashed on the island of Iwo Jima. A few decades later, hundreds of letters were extracted from this arid land, finally allowing for a names, faces, and voices to be given to these men as well as their extraordinary commander. The Japanese soldiers who were sent to Iwo Jima knew their chances of survival were next to zero. Driven by an implacable will, their leader General Kuribayashi made masterful use of the terrain, and thus turned what everyone thought would be lightning-fast defeat into 40 days of heroic battles. Several American and Japanese soldiers lost their lives at Iwo Jima. Their blood has long since been lost in the depths of the island’s black sand, but their sacrifices, courage, and compassion live on in these letters.
