Try Beating Me Lightly - A Slam Poem by Areesha Khuwaja

Each time we speak up they zip-lock our mouths and lock it with the tag of "feminazi". So instead, women have to pay with their lives for even trying to break away from their standards of patriarchal morality & sexuality. The audacity of anyone to end the life of another...As women, we are objectified and viewed as property all too often. Yesterday, an outspoken, bold, courageous, non conformist woman was murdered by her brother in the name of honor. Few weeks ago, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) distributed the draft of its proposed women "protection" bill, recommending ‘a light beating’ to a wife who defied her husband’s will. This poem is my response to all this insanity.
