NEW YORK — With Republicans preparing for next week’s the national convention, presumptive GOP candidate Donald Trump was busy holding tryouts to see who the last man standing would be for his all-important veep selection.

Trump said Friday Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is his choice for his number two.

“I am pleased to announce that I have chosen Governor Mike Pence as my Vice Presidential running mate,” Trump tweeted.

CNN reported on Thursday that Trump had called Pence and offered him the vice presidential nod, which Pence accepted.

Trump held a series of auditions with Pence and his other top contenders, Newt Gingrich and Chris Christie. However, in the end Trump went with Pence.

Pence gives Trump a running mate with strong ties to the GOP base. But most importantly, he’s tight with the Koch brothers and other wealthy donors. Pence has also shown he can be an attack dog against Hillary.

Now, one question remains: who’s Clinton’s veep going to be?
