Taiwan is bracing itself for massive Super Typhoon Meranti which is due to slam into the island Wednesday morning.

Meranti has grown from a category 1 storm to the top scale of category 5 in just 24 hours.

As the storm neared the southern tip of Taiwan preparations were underway. Gusts of up to 360 kph are expected which brings with them lashing rain and flooding. Power and communication lines are vulnerable and landslides probable.

Taiwan is home to roughly 23 million people. Most of the population lives on the northern and western side of the island, but even though Meranti is passing the southern edge it is such a powerful storm that the entire island is likely to feel its effects.

Meranti is the strongest typhoon in the Western Pacific since Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which killed more than 6,000 people in the Philippines.
