Suspicious device explodes near New Jersey train station

An explosive device found in a trash can near a New Jersey train station detonated early Monday as a bomb squad robot was trying to disarm it. According to Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage, the explosion was not a controlled blast but it happened as authorities were using the robot to examine the device. The item was one of five devices that were found in a backpack discovered in a trash can by two men around 8:30 p.m. Sunday that reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of the package.
