New HIV trial kicks off in South Africa

A new vaccine against HIV is underway in an upcoming trial in South Africa that could help put a halt on the global pandemic. The trial, which will be carried out on South African adults, will be the first test of the vaccine in seven years. The study, called HVTN 702, will enroll about 5,400 sexually active men and women aged between 18 and 35 across the country. The study marks the largest HIV vaccine clinical trial to take place in South Africa, where more than 1,000 people a day are infected. The findings of the vaccine study are expected in late 2020.
