The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says women should carefully consider the benefits and risks of permanent birth control devices. The agency recently introduced labeling changes to device called Essure, which consists of flexible metal coils that eventually blocks sperm from reaching the eggs. The FDA says since the device is made with metal, women who are sensitive or allergic to metals should let their doctor know about their allergy. Essure is also not immediately effective in preventing pregnancy. Women must use another form of birth control for at least three months after the device is implanted.
