Song : Om Devaki Nandanaya (Krishna Mantra)
Album: Shree Krishna Mantra
Singer: Suresh Wadkar
Composer: Vilas Adkar & Mayuresh Pai
Anguish, hope, knowledge of sacred depths and vastness, simplicity and elegance lie at the core of this heart-rending hymn by Kuntidevi in the Srimad Bhagavatam.
Within its 26 verses (skanda 1, adhyaya 8, shlokas 18-43) is one of the shlokas that is sung by mothers to calm children and put them to sleep so that the children (and the mothers!) sleep peacefully: verse 21 - Krishnaya Vasudevaya Devaki Nandanaya cha Nandagopakumaraya Govindaya Namoh Namah.
Even if the children do not know the entire Bhagavatam, they get a set of five names of the Lord, each with several stories of deep import yet simple enough to captivate their imagination. And they learn how a shloka is chanted, night after night. They can find out about the rest of the Shastras and Sanskrit at their own pace, like me.
This hymn is one of the five prayers collectively known as the Panch stuti in the Srimad Bhagavatam composed by Bhagwan Veda Vyasa. Kunti stuti is followed by Bhishma stuti: the others being Dhruva stuti, Prahlada stuti and Gajendra stuti. Among these stutis, Kunti's stuti is the only one by a female person. All the others are males in different forms and ages, signifying the different stages of spiritual development.
