AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND — New Zealand Breakers basketball player Akil Mitchell is recovering from a horrific and eye-popping injury this week.
On Thursday night, the 24 year-old was challenging Nnanna Egwu of the Cairn Taipans’ for the ball when his left eye suddenly popped out of the socket. Mitchell fell to the ground in agony and was immediately treated for his injury.
Breakers General Manager Dillon Boucher told ESPN that the injury isn’t as serious as it was initially believed to be.
Mitchell later sent out a tweet — featuring a tongue-in-cheek glancing eyes emoji — that noted he was seeing fine and will get more tests this week.
