Vampire Bats Are Thirsty For Human Blood

by Sara RaoVampire bats in Brazil are now feasting on human blood. Scientists analyzed the dung of the hairy-legged vampire bat and found human blood in three out of 15 bat dung samples. Bats in the Caatinga forests of Brazil generally consume blood from birds, but deforestation has decreased the number of birds in the area forcing the bats to look for new sources of blood. Researchers believe the bats feed while their human hosts are asleep in bed. Bats are notorious carriers of diseases like rabies, so this discovery isn’t just nightmarish – it raises health concerns as well.
