Monkeys Are Just As Vain As Humans

by Jeff DonlanMonkeys now have the ability to admire themselves in the mirror according to a new study that put rhesus monkeys through the mirror self-recognition (MSR) test. The MSR test is one of the only ways of determining whether other species are self-aware. While looking in a mirror, the monkeys would touch objects that had a light shining on them. After several weeks of training, the dot was moved to the monkeys’ faces. They were able to touch the dot, and eventually had a moment of realization that it was their own face. Once they realized they were looking at themselves, they moved on to checking out normally unseen parts of their body.
