LAHORE: An accountability court in Lahore has issued arrest warrants of former Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) board of director and co-accused Wazir Ali in the corruption references against former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, ARY News reported.

The former premier appeared in the hearing of the Gepco fake recruitment reference filed against him today.

He pleaded to the court to exempt him from appearing in the hearing of the case due to security reasons. The court directed him to submit a written plea.

The court said that the decision will be taken after submission of his plea.

A co-accused of the case Wazir Ali failed to appear in the hearing after which the bench issued his arrest orders.

Ashraf and other defendants have been accused of carrying out illegal recruitment in the power generation company by exercising their authority.

The former prime minister, speaking to media after the hearing, stated that hiring poor people has become a crime. He also accused National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of having double standards.

He said, “I respect the country’s judicial system. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leaders Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto also appeared before the courts out of respect.”

Replying a question Ashraf sqaid that terrorism has become a cancer and the nation has to tackle it with national unity.
