KALIMANTAN, INDONESIA — If you didn’t already know, selfies can kill. The latest deadly accident claimed a junior high student earlier this week at the Binusan waterfall in north Kalimantan, Indonesia.

That student is Nurul Asmi, who was helping her cousin, Sarah, who wanted to get that perfect shot. Tragically, had they arrived on time to class that day, Nurul may still be alive.

They were late and, in line with school rules, weren’t permitted to join class. Instead of going home, they decided to head to the waterfall, flush from recent rains.

When they arrived, Nurul took a seat on one of the rocks. Wanting a pic, Sarah took her position and posed -- but then she slipped.

Nurul tried to grab Sarah’s and pull her to safety. But Nurul lost her balance and fell into the deep pool. She wasn’t able to keep her head above water, and drowned there in front of her cousin.

Several hours later, a recovery team arrived and found Nurul’s body.

Nurul was buried on February 21.
