Hassan Akkad is an English teacher and photographer from Damascus, Syria. He is one of the millions of people who arrived in Europe in 2015 following a long, arduous journey. Akkad shares a story and experience of many refugees fleeing conflict, a story we hear all too frequently on the news but that he has told in a ground-breaking way. Having filmed his entire journey on a GoPro camera, his footage and story were part of the BBC 2 documentary Exodus: Our Journey to Europe. Having ultimately triumphed and made it to England, here he recounts his trip—and his determination to keep filming no matter how treacherous the circumstances—in deeply personal detail.
