LOCKHART, TEXAS — A high school teacher was photographed grinning ear to ear at the police station while she was getting booked on suspicions of a having an affair with one of her students.

Sarah Fowlkes, 27, has been a science teacher in Lockhart, Texas since 2014. While there, she allegedly became intimate with a 17-year-old male student, despite being married since 2013. Police say the two exchanged text messages of a “sexual nature,” which may developed into a physical relationship.

On March 10, school administrators were tipped off about their bond, and immediately suspended Fowlkes before contacting police. Mere hours after celebrating her 27th birthday with her husband, Fowlkes was issued a warrant for her arrest, and willingly turned herself into authorities. When she arrived at the station, she reportedly removed her cardigan and smiled for her mugshot.

Fowlkes is facing charges for “sexual content with the intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire” of the 17-year-old student. If convicted, she could serve a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

In the state of Texas, 17 is the legal age of consent. However, educators are forbidden from engaging in sexual relationships with their students.
