KENT, WASHINGTON — A debate between feminists, city officials and business owners is brewing in Washington state over the seductive staff dress code at a rising U.S. coffee chain.

The official uniform for baristas at Bikini Beans Espresso is unsurprisingly, a bikini. The female owner of the chain claims the concept behind the outfit is about empowering women as a whole to feel good about themselves, whether they’re wearing suits, scrubs, or sexy bikinis. The company’s Instagram page mainly features photos of its scantily clad baristas wearing the uniform is a variety of poses, as well as several shots of them wearing only bikini bottoms accompanied by painted nipples.

Spokane city councillor Mike Fagan is trying to introduce limitations to make coffee shops adhere to more family-friendly standards, arguing the business should be all about the coffee and not about the bodies of its female staff.

The reviews on Yelp are largely positive, with customers commenting on the beautiful baristas, as well as the coffee shop’s top-of-the-line service. Many staff members themselves have defended their dress code, claiming families come in all the time, with some becoming regulars as a result of the fun-friendly atmosphere.
