3D-Printed Amphibious Prosthetic Enables Veteran To Swim

by Andrew CaringiAn injured veteran can now teach his kids how to swim thanks to 3D-printing. U.S. Marine Dan Lasko lost the lower part of his left leg in Afghanistan. A traditional prosthetic helped Dan get back to playing football and running marathons, but swimming with his two young sons remained a challenge. That’s until researchers at Northwell Health in New York created “The Fin.” The light, flexible prosthetic was 3D-printed with carbon fiber enhanced nylon. A built-in triangular wedge helps propel Dan through the water.  “The Fin” will be commercially available in about six months.
