The Cleveland police officer who fatally shot Tamir Rice in 2014 was fired on Tuesday—but not because of the shooting. Timothy Loehmann was fired after investigators found that he wasn’t truthful on his employment application "Patrol officer Loehmann had been charged with rule violations concerning his application process to be considered a cadet with the Division of Police — specifically, answers he had provided on his personal history statement," Michael McGrath, the city's director of public safety, told reporters in prepared remarks. Frank Garmback, who was with Loehmann during the shooting, will be suspended for 10 days because of administrative rule violations. Tamir Rice’s mother called the firing “deeply disappointing.” "I am relieved Loehmann has been fired because he should never have been a police officer in the first place -- but he should have been fired for shooting my son in less than one second, not just for lying on his application," a statement from Samaria Rice read. 12-year-old Tamar Rice was shot by Loehmann on November 22, 2014, and his death caused an uprising by the Black Lives Matter movement.
