Donald Trump Jr., President Trump's son, in the hours after the Wednesday shooting in Alexandria, Virginia, appeared to tie the incident to a New York production of Shakespeare’s 'Julius Caesar,' reports The Hill.
In that iteration of the often-performed, late 16th, early 17th century classic, the ultimately slain titular character is seemingly fashioned to resemble President Trump, notes CNN.
Trump Jr. tweeted, ”This” followed by a link to Harlan Z. Hill’s Wednesday morning Twitter comment, “Events like today are EXACTLY why we took issue with NY elites glorifying the assassination of our President.”
In the ‘event’ apparently referenced in the tweet, a gunman fired shots into a group of people at a GOP congressional baseball team practice, hitting Republican Representative Steve Scalise in the hip and injuring others.
President Trump was quick to respond in both a tweet and a statement.
He wrote on Twitter, “Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.”
He also said in a statement, “The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”
Authorities identified the shooter as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old resident of Belleville, Illinois, who has since died from his injuries.
