Cementing Feet, Rejecting the Plant - AIMAN (Part 1)

Thousands of residents of Kendeng Mountains, Rembang, Central Java staged another protest. They even dared to bury their feet in the mortar right in front of the presidential palace. They began the action on March 13th, 2017 that means that they have been doing it for more than a week. The same action was performed by the farmers of Kendeng Mountains a year ago. The action of burying the feet in mortar symbolized their opposition to the reissuance of the mining and plant development permit for the largest state-owned cement company, PT Semen Indonesia in Rembang district. The permit was reissued by the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo on February 24th 2017. The reissuance of the permit contradicts with the Supreme Court’s legal review decision made on October 2016. The decision granted the people of Kendeng to revoke the environmental and development mining permit of PT Semen Indonesia factory.
