Shabir Karim, best known as Karim or Cartier Karim, is an Afghan-American artist from the “Middle East Side” of Queens, NY. While New York’s rap scene is littered with artists who want to bring hip hop’s golden era back, Karim is a Renaissance rapper, able to switch his style up with ease.
His catalog -- which includes two full-length EPs and a few loosies -- is an exercise in experimentation explored through his identity as an artist.
Karim's freshman project, Metropolitics, is throwback to East Coast rap, highlighting his aspirations and desire of a luxurious lifestyle over a range of rich production. "Gotham" is one of the EP's standout songs.
His follow up project, Liberty City Storiez, earned accolades at The Source and several other notable hip hop platforms, ultimately landing him a hard-earned spot in The Source's well-respected "Unsigned Hype" contest, where he emerged as a finalist.
"Broke" is the lead single and visual for his upcoming project, which is currently untitled. The EP will feature producers from within his camp, "Gritty Committee," which includes his brother Yaser, aka Laurent, and his brother Dullie, who's also the executive producer. The project will boast a wide range of producers such as fellow New York producer Offy, the Philly-based K. Rich, and Gaka, the pioneer of South Korean trap. Chicago's Sir Michael Rocks and associated acts like Philly's Shizz U will make an appearance as well.
Be on the lookout for what's yet to come -- a release date will be announced soon.
A new wave is emerging from New York. That gritty shit is back.
