DIZZY GILLESPIE & TRIO MOCOTO - ROCKING WITH MOCOTO

In 1974 while touring Brazil, Dizzy Gillespie had the idea of recording an album with a Samba School drum set, but faced with the difficulties of putting this whole group in a studio, he opted for a band that played the rhythm. The choice was settled, Dizzy recorded the album with the Trio Mocotó .
All good, everyone happy with the results, Dizzy takes the master recordings to his label Verve..............Then nothing. For nearly 35 years. One of the members of Trio Mocoto meets up with Dizzy at a Jazz Festival but he can't even remember doing the session or where the masters are. In fact this recording never saw the light of day until 2008 when it was finally released on cd. Just in time to see the demise of the cd, the emergence of downloads and streaming and the banking crisis. Still, it's powerful enough to overcome all that. I've often imagined this particular track going down a storm in the various soiree's and Palais' de Dance I've played in many years ago. I play it now anyway, but would have loved this at the Horseshoe or the Electric Ballroom.
"Rocking With Mocotó" is an insanely fast drum and cuica led percussion workout with Dizzy's soloing gliding over the top but also holding it all together.
Trio Mocotó: João Parahyba (percussion), Nereu Gargalho (pandeiro) and Fritz Escova (cuíca) , also featured Al Gafa: Guitar, Earl May: Bass, Mickey Roker: Drums.
Dizzy Gillespie: Trumpet
