Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off after scoring a spectacular winner for Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

The Portuguese forward was booked for his celebration, ripping his shirt off and then holding it aloft like Lionel Messi did at the Santiago Bernabeu last season, and seconds later was booked for diving and dismissed.

However, his scorcher, hammered into the top corner on the break, gives Madrid the edge after Lionel Messi’s penalty cancelled out Gerard Pique’s own goal.

A tense first half saw few clear cut chances, with Luis Suarez stinging Keylor Navas’ palms, while Isco drilled into the side netting and Gareth Bale forced Marc-Andre ter Stegen to tip the ball over.

The second half was more expansive, end-to-end, and Pique broke the deadlock after 50 minutes, unfortunately for him at the wrong end. The defender slid in to divert Marcelo’s cross past Ter Stegen.

Barcelona should have equalised with 15 minutes to go but Sergio Busquets hammered over as Denis Suarez played the ball across goal, before Suarez dived to win a penalty which Messi convered, before the Ronaldo show took over.

Marco Asensio capped off the win with a stunner of his own to show what all the fuss is about.
