Heroin has become the top drug overdose killer in the U.S., while the number of fentanyl overdose deaths has doubled in just one year. According to a new report, the first federal government report to look at which specific drugs are killing people rather than drug overdose deaths in general, heroin passed oxycodone as the top killer in 2012. In 2014, heroin caused 23 percent of overdose deaths. The report also found that nearly half of all overdose deaths are caused by more than one drug. 50,000 Americans were killed by drug overdoses last year.
