Puerto Rico dam on verge of COLLAPSE: 70K forced to evacuate after Hurricane Maria floods
TENS of thousands of people already devastated by the destruction of Hurricane Maria are being rushed out of their homes after a dam threatens to pour downstream onto the stricken island of Puerto Rico. Emergency officials in Puerto Rico raced to evacuate almost 70,000 people away from the eastern dam on the rain-swollen Guajataca River, which will cave “very soon” under the weight of flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.Disaster-struck residents of the area were being ferried to higher ground in buses, according to bulletins issued by the National Weather Service from its office in San Juan, the capital of the US island territory. The National Weather Service San Juan tweeted: “2:15pm flash flood emergency for a dam failure in Isabela municipality y Quebradillas municipality in Puerto Rico…“This is an extremely dangerous situation. Busses are currently evacuating people from the area as quickly as they can. “All areas surrounding the Guajataca River should evacuate now. Their lives are in danger! Please share!”The emerging calamity unfolded as Puerto Ricans struggled without electricity to clean up and dig out from the devastation left days earlier by Maria, which has killed at least 25 people across the Caribbean. Christina Villalba, an official for the island’s emergency management agency, said there was little doubt the dam was about to break. She said: “It could be tonight, it could be tomorrow, it could be in the next few days, but it’s very likely it will be soon.”Felix Delgado, mayor of the northern coastal city of Catano, said: “Months and months and months and months are going to pass before we can recover from this.”Luis Gutierrez, a Democratic representative of Puerto Rican descent, said public health and infrastructure has been "literally blown away" by Hurricane Maria, which was a category four storm when it hit on Thursday.. 00FastNews.
