Starting an OET speaking for nurses role play\r
After you have looked at the tasks on your role play, you should have an idea of the language the interviewer will be expecting to hear from you. In other words, what is the purpose of the role play. Is it :\r
• to give information or explain treatment\r
• to persuade the patient to do something or not to do something\r
• to empathise with the patient\r
• to give advice\r
You should be able to draw on some expressions which you have prised beforehand. But starting the role play is sometimes difficult. In authentic conversations, you will have been taught to ask open questions to encourage the patient to talk. The OET asks you to do this while doing most of the talking yourself.\r
There are two paths the conversation may take. The first possibility is that you will start the conversation. The second possibility is that the patient will start it off. Remember that you wont have the benefit of seeing the patients role card so it will be guess work in the beginning.\r
The role play cards contain around 4 tasks for you to cover. The first task is the cue for the start of the role play. The most common is a Find out about.. task. \r
