A dustbin placed outside a temple to collect garbage emerged as the latest deity for innocent Indian women at a village in Bihar last week.

The women had flocked to a temple to perform Chhath Puja, a popular festival in which natural elements such as sun and water are worshipped.

A few of them spotted the brand-new fibreglass dustbin in the shape of a kangaroo with an open pouch to drop waste.

An astonishing video shows the women worshiping it by performing rituals after mistaking it for a new deity. They even take turns to put sacred vermillion on its forehead, pour holy water into the open pouch and deck it up with flowers as well.

It is not clear what triggered the wave of devotion towards the dustbin, but it does not come as a surprise for many observers of Hinduism.

Richa Sharma, a general manager at ITC hotels, noted on Facebook that “they may have mistaken the kangaroo for a mouse.”

Hindus worship mouse as popular god Ganesha uses it as his mount in the legends.

Hinduism also has a myriad of gods with many of them representing different elements of nature. A Hindu village is surrounded by sacred objects each of which is revered by the residents.

The women may have followed their natural inclination when they spotted a new object outside a temple on a festival day and extended their devotion to it.
