This Giant Scary Crab Climbed A Tree To Kill A Bird

A giant, scary crab was caught and killed a bird.

The coconut crab, which can climb trees, is the largest land-dwelling invertebrate in the world. They grow three feet long and weigh nearly 10 pounds. Scientists caught this one hunting a seabird; it's the first time the species’ predatory behavior has been documented. They say it scaled a tree and pulled the bird from its nest.

Coconut crabs have also been known to feast on chickens and cats, and even their own friends and family. Some theorize the crabs, which live primarily on remote Pacific and Indian Ocean islands, killed Amelia Earhart and carried her bones underground. But don’t worry —
these dog-sized crabs usually shy away from humans.
