Dem southern Folkz Final
On Monday, July 14, 2008, Austin-based computer music company Open Labs launched a video on their website featuring a U.S. sergeant live from his station in Iraq, performing an original composition with his band from Dallas, Texas. Sgt. Thomas Benjamin (who produces and raps for Dallas hip-hop group, Dem Southern Folkz) used a webcam at his workstation in Tikrit, Iraq, to do a live collaboration with the other two members of his band, Jack Kinfoke and Saturday Alridge. The latter two members were in Austin, Texas, at the time of the collaboration. The entire event was broadcast live on Friday, June 19, 2008 from the Open Labs website.
"Even though we talk to him every week, it's another thing to see your brother moving and talking and doing well," said Alridge.
"We really appreciate that opportunity," added Sgt. Benjamin. "We can't thank [Open Labs] enough. I hope this is the beginning of a long lasting relationship."
The Dem Southern Folkz performance was featured on the Open Labs live webcast weekend, which aired from Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21.
