Dramatic moment Cyclone Ockhi disrupts beach wedding

A carefully planned beach wedding was disrupted by Cyclone Ockhi.

The intense cyclonic storm wreaked havoc on parts of India this week.

High tidal waves triggered by Ockhi invaded the well-lit wedding canopy at Summer Sands resort near Mangalore just as guests had begun to arrive.

A few guests, who were sitting on the beach enjoying the nightly sky, were the first to spot the waves that roared in without any warning.

The CCTV cameras at the resort caught them running for safety leaving their belongings behind. They were followed by a larger group, which was dancing at the venue.

As the water flooded the beach, the venue bore a deserted look.

A resort official, Aloysious Albuquerque, said: “The event was shifted inside and was wrapped up in a hurry. The waves even pulled down a wall we had built along the sea,” he added.

A senior district official, Sasikanth Senthil, said the government had advised those living on the shore to evacuate.

According to Indian officials, 39 people have lost their lives so far and nearly 175 fishermen gone missing due to the Cyclone Ockhi.

Rescue operations are underway to move the affected people to safety and supply relief materials.
