Here at Cooking Vinyl we like to keep abreast of all the new developments in the music industry, particularly the really big issues that impact us all.

However, even when we think we’ve got a good handle on what’s happening changes occur so quickly in our business that it’s hard to make time to sit down and really think about the implications.

With that in mind we have decided to curate a number of panel discussions over the next few months, which we are simply calling ‘The Future of ….” sessions.

Taking place at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden on a monthly basis we are getting the smartest people we know to talk about the future of some key areas of the industry.

“The Future of …” sessions are invite only and will, we hope, provide some clear thinking and real insight into where our industry is going from experts in their respective fields.

Our first event took place on Monday November 9th, ‘The Future of…. The Record Deal.’

Moderated by Music Business Worldwide Founder Tim Ingham our panellists featuring: Mike Smith (President of Music – Virgin EMI), Billy Bragg, industry lawyer Paul Spraggan (Partner – SSB), Phil Morais (Machine Management) and Cooking Vinyl founder Martin Goldschmidt, look at how the traditional record deal has evolved in recent times and what it means for both content owners and artists today.

What is the role of a record label in today's industry?

Can the digital music industry allow artists to have more control over the rights to their music?

Are service deals more lucrative for artists and labels?

Should artists negotiate retailer rights?

Do artists need to be more aware of the role of rights-holders in the age of digital streaming?
