2015 was a big year for Irish songwriter Jack O’Rourke. His debut EP The Other Side of Now was released in June, a five track introduction to the Cork man's talent for crafting and delivering songs, both fragile and full-bodied. Large scale production stands side by side with the raw and unconcealed - this is Jack O'Rourke.
Three singles from the EP (Naivety, Shining For You and The Other Side of Now) were playlisted on RTE Radio 1 and attracted significant radio play across Ireland. The EP also contained a song that struck the right chord at the right time. ‘Silence’ was used by Amnesty International for the Yes Campaign in the successful Marriage Equality Referendum, an issue close to Jack’s heart. Jack has since performed this song live on RTE's The Late Late Show and the song is currently available as a charity single with all proceeds going to Amnesty International-Ireland.
A gritty yet polished songwriter, in parts introspective balladeer, Jack pushes the boundaries of noir folk with heartbreaking torch songs, peppered with baroque pop. He sings between a grizzled baritone and ethereal falsetto, assured yet plaintive; lyrically exploring the subtleties of his environment and his place in the world at large.
‘Silence’ was one of RTE presenter Fiachna O’Braonain’s songs of the year and also recently featured in ‘The Great Irish Songbook’ on BBC4, presented by Cerys Matthews. Jack’s material draws parallels with the work of Nick Cave and Tom Waits, Father John Misty and John Grant, while his critical acclaim to date bodes well for the release of his debut album, Dreamcatcher, in late 2016.
