CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — MIT researchers have engineered a plant that can glow in the dark from the same enzyme fire flies use to glow.

According to an MIT news release, scientists laced watercress plants with the luciferase enzyme.

They envision the plant being used as a desk lamp replacement, but say it could possibly be applied to street lamps in the future.

Details of the research were published in the journal Nanoletters.
