Hoglet with fly strike

Hoglet with fly strike. We found this lovely little hoglet in our garden on an October morning. We thought they might have lost their mum or perhaps been attacked by a cat. It looked a little unstable, its stomach was moving about quite violently and there were flies around its eyes. We tried giving some milk and some bread and then put them in our hedgehog house. Thankfully we thought better of this and searched Google for hoglet in garden in daytime in October and quickly realised we shouldn't have given any milk or bread! We came across Prickles Hedgehog Rescue and phoned them. We were told it was probably Fly Strike. Flystrike is a painful, sometimes fatal, condition caused by flies laying eggs on another animal, which hatch into maggots and eat their host's flesh. We placed the hoglet in a box lined with newspaper on top of a blanket covered hot water bottle half filled with warm water from the tap. We took it to the vet who promptly put it down. They checked the breathing which was bad and there were flies eggs in the eyes. It seemed a harsh response from the vet but the poor little hoglet was too far gone. We believe the rest of their family is hibernating safely underneath our garden office.
