Indian woman skydives wearing 27-feet traditional saree

An Indian woman has set a new record by skydiving while wearing a saree, an unwieldy garment that is wrapped around the body.

Shital Mahajan Rane, 37, jumped from a feet of 13,000 feet at Pattaya, Thailand, on February 11, draping herself with a traditional nine-yard (27-feet) saree.

Shital said, "I always wanted to do something different with skydiving.”

She knew that jumping from a plane wearing a saree would be risky as the garment would peel off due to strong winds blowing at that height.

So, she chose to wear the traditional ‘Maharashtrian Navwari-style’ saree, which is tucked both in front and back.

“I prepared my saree by taping, stitching and pinning it properly," she said.

The Thai instructor was sceptical and didn’t allow her to skydive wearing a saree on the first day of the course.

On the second day, she convinced him, but the bad weather played the spoilsport.

“On the third day, I finally jumped from 13,000 feet," Shital said.

Mother of two children, Shital is an avid skydiver.

She has jumped over North pole and all seven continents including Antarctica.
