Donald Trump asks for help from China's leader, Xi Jinping, in this week's Economist cartoon from Kal. Peer inside the mind of our political cartoonist as he conjures up a dragon for the 19th China national congress.

One of Kal’s favourite things to draw is a dragon, so when a new story pops up involving China Kal instinctively looks for a way to involve the reptilian Chinese national symbol into his artwork for the Economist.

This week presented the perfect opportunity. It was the 19th Communist Party Congress in Beijing, were over 2,000 participants meet to plot China's future.

This year's Congress will also be a consolidating moment for Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will purge opponents and strengthen his grip on power.

The eye is first drawn to the left of the cartoon, to the Dragons large toothy head, beneath stands a Xi Jinping confidently controlling the monster.

The eye moves gracefully eastward along the curve of the body until it settles on the rear quarters. Here we discover the real target of Xi's orders.

But there is someone else who is also attracted to dragons. President Donald Trump is a relatively new member of the American Republican Party. Yet, despite having Republicans running the US government, the inexperienced Trump has had less luck than Xi with coaxing his party's animal.
